The Chairman of DPFZA and a Djiboutian Delegation Visit Belgium to Discuss Environmental Initiatives, and Investment Opportunities

The Chairman of the Ports and Free Zones Authority, Mr. Aboubaker Omar Hadi, led by the Minister of Infrastructure and Equipment, H.E. Mr. Hassan Houmed Ibrahim, and H.E. Mr. Aden Mohamed Dileita, Ambassador to the Benelux and Scandinavian countries and Head of Mission to the European Union, has commenced a formal visit to Belgium.

The delegation's first meeting was with Ms. Rita Laranjiha, Director for Africa at the European External Action Service. During the meeting, the Djiboutian delegation outlined their aspirations for Djibouti's ports to evolve into a major regional, continental, and international trade hub. They also highlighted their concerns about maritime security in light of the current situation in the Red Sea. Furthermore, the delegation expressed their commitment to developing and strengthening their human capital and adhering to international maritime standards. Given that over 20,000 ships pass through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and more than 2,000 ships call annually at Djibouti ports, sailling from the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea via the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea, the delegation emphasized the need to establish a reception facility for used oils and contaminated wastewater from ships. This initiative is crucial for the prevention and protection of the environment.

The second meeting was with Mr. Cosmin Dobran, Director of the European External Action Service - Peace, Partnership, and Crisis Management. During the meeting, the discussions focused on the military operations under the Atalanta Operations-ASPIDES initiative in the Red Sea region, which has recently experienced instability. They also addressed the importance of prevention of potential crisis.

The final meeting took place with Mr. Hans Staussboll, Director for Africa at the European Commission. The primary objective of this meeting was to enhance collaborative efforts for financing viable projects. Chairman Hadi stated in the meeting, "We do not want EU taxpayer money. We are seeking investors for bankable projects. No exclusion and no exclusivity."
