Chairman Meets with UNDP Resident Representative

The Chairman met with Ms. Alessandra Roccasalvo, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to the Republic of Djibouti.

The discussions centered on the importance of training and capacity-building for youth as an effective means of poverty alleviation. The chairman stated that it will be achieved through education (skills) and job creation. The Chairman highlighted Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority’s continued commitment to empowering young people through education and professional development.

In this context, DPFZA has sponsored the training of 22 female marine officers, including 18 deck officers and 4 engineers, who recently graduated from the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport in Egypt. Additionally, 120 trainees were trained in India, with 37% of them being women, reflecting Djibouti’s dedication to gender inclusion in the maritime sector.

The discussions also covered cooperation in establishing a Maritime Academy for East Africa, particularly in the fields of maritime engineering and technical training in Djibouti.

Finally, both parties exchanged views on renewable energy initiatives, notably the Red Sea Power (RSP) Wind Farm Project near Lake Goubet, developed in partnership with Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), FMO, and Climate Fund Managers (CFM). The  wind farm supplies 60 megawatts of clean energy, further advancing Djibouti’s sustainable development goals.
