Djibouti’s role as a regional hub for livestock shipping
On 4th January, at Red sea world, the Chairman received Dr. Rola Dashti Under-Secretary Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia from the United Nations and Dr. Nasser Al Qahtani chief Executive Officer from the Gulf Programme for Development AGFUND.
The discussions highlighted key areas for growth. DPFZA is building mega projects and we want to promote local medium and small enterprises in the field of construction, while leveraging microfinance.
Another major point of discussion centered on Djibouti's role as a regional hub for livestock shipping. In 2024 alone, DPFZA facilitated the shipment of 1.2 million heads of livestock to regional markets. Additionally, fresh meat is going to be exported through air cargo.
The Horn of Africa is emerging as a strong competitor in livestock shipping to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, challenging established exporters such as Australia, Argentina, and New Zealand. One key advantage is its proximity to the GCC region, with livestock shipments requiring only two days of sailing compared to the five weeks needed for shipments from Argentina, New Zealand, and Australia. Additionally, livestock from the Horn of Africa is often organic, further enhancing its appeal to GCC markets seeking high-quality, sustainable products.
The discussions concluded by reaffirming a commitment to creating jobs, fostering sustainable development, and supporting fair trade. These efforts aim to empower small and medium businesses.
