President Ismail Omar Guelleh inaugurates 4 high-capacity gantry cranes and a yard extension at the SGTD.

Yesterday, the President of the Republic, H.E.Mr Ismail Omar Guelleh, accompanied by the First Lady, Mrs Khadra Mahamoud Haid, inaugurated four high-capacity gantry cranes and a yard extension at the ‘Société  de Gestion du Terminal à conteneurs de Doraleh (SGTD).

The SGTD's position as the operator of the most modern and technologically advanced terminal in East Africa is commendable. Being a leading enabler of trade, the terminal's role in connecting local markets to the global supply chain is crucial for the economic development of the region. 

The addition of these four high-capacity gantry cranes and the 5 ha yard extension is not only a significant boost to the port's performance but also positions it to accommodate the largest and most modern vessels globally, further enhancing its standing in the maritime industry.

It’s worth noting that the World Bank ranked the SGTD the first position among container terminals in the Sub Saharan Africa and the 3rd in the African continent.

This recognition underscores the terminal's efficiency and excellence in handling containerized cargo. The SGTD berth productivity is 100 moves per hour/crane and 1 move every 1mn 30s. The crane density is 87.5 m.

The SGTD's role as a leading port and regional hub for transshipment is vital. Hence, these new cranes will the handling of the port capacity in term of transshipment.

These new cranes and yard extension will also create more job opportunities.

Overall, the advancements and achievements of the SGTD have contributed significantly to the economic growth and connectivity of the East Coast of Africa and the Red Sea countries.
