Strengthening trade ties between Djibouti and Ethiopia’s Somali regional state

At Red Sea World, the Chairman of Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority, received a delegation from the Somali Regional State of Ethiopia.

The delegation was led by Hon. Abdihakim Sheikh Hassen Ali, Head of the Office of Trade and Transport of the Somali Regional State.

The delegation also included the following officials:

•⁠  ⁠Ahmed Reshid Abdile, Head of the Investment and Industry Bureau

•⁠  ⁠Shafi Ahmed Mealin, Mayor of Jigjiga

•⁠  ⁠Ahmed Welli Hassan, President of the Chamber of Commerce.

The objective of the High-level delegation’s visit to Djibouti was to explore opportunities for trade and investment collaboration. The Somali Regional State of Ethiopia is known for its natural resources, livestock, and agricultural potential. The direct road connection between Djibouti and Jigjiga strengthens economic integration by facilitating efficient trade flows.

The Chairman highlighted the importance of the role of regional trade corridors in promoting economic integration and unlocking growth opportunities. He stated the importance of enhancing commerce through strategic initiatives that connect markets, reduce physical and unphysical trade barriers.

The distance Jigjiga-Djibouti Doraleh Ports Corridor is 357 km.

The distance jigjiga-Harmukale Corridor is 104 km.

The distance Shinileh- Djibouti Corridor is 328 km.

During their visit, the Somali representatives attended detailed presentations on: - The Sea-Air Cargo Initiative, showcasing innovative logistics solutions.

•⁠  ⁠The business intelligence services provided by DPCS Djibouti to support trade and investment.

•⁠  ⁠The C-Star youth training program, aimed at empowering the next generation of entrepreneurs in East Africa.

Chairman Aboubaker Omar Hadi also proposed that the delegation explore opportunities to benefit from the upcoming Maritime Academy Center, which will soon launch in Djibouti, as a means to develop maritime expertise and expand trade capacity.

The delegation toured Djibouti’s state-of-the-art logistics infrastructure, including:

•⁠  ⁠The Damerjog Oil Jetty and the DDID showroom

•⁠  ⁠The Djibouti International Free Trade Zone (DITFZ)

-The Doraleh Multi-Purpose Port (DMP)
