We extend our warmest wishes to all seafarers on this special day!
As the first port in the world to continue facilitating crew changes during the COVID-19 pandemic, we recognize the invaluable contributions of seafarers, who are the backbone of maritime trade. With seaborne trade accounting for 80% of global commerce, it is clear: no seafarers, no maritime trade.
Djibouti also honors its maritime heritage. In the 1900s, hundreds of Djiboutian sailors served on coal-powered ships of the Messageries Maritimes, navigating routes between Djibouti, Vietnam, Marseille, and Madagascar. Renowned worldwide, they played a pivotal role in Djibouti's economic life.
Djibouti currently boasts 56 merchant marine officers and pilots, many of whom are undergoing hands-on training at our state-of-the-art port facilities. Others serve as experienced crew on our port tugboats, expertly managing harbor operations.
Looking ahead, we celebrate a new milestone: 23 young women, set to complete their academic and maritime training in Alexandria this September, represent the future of Djibouti’s maritime excellence.
Today, we celebrate the dedication, resilience, and essential contributions of seafarers past and present in keeping the world moving.
